“To play a role in facilitating spiritual revival as a precondition to harmonious development of the world”. This is the appeal launched on July 1st to all world religious leaders in the welcome address of Kazakhstan’s President Nazarbayev during the 3rd Congress of World and Traditional Religions. 77 delegations from 35 countries including representatives of Islam, Christianity, Jewish community and ancient Eastern religions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Shinto and Zoroastrianism. The President explained: “Spiritual leaders, like in all times, have been the keepers of utmost moral values. Therefore a special hope is placed on them.” Nazarbayev said that the current crisis had given the world a chance to change and improve through dialogue and mutually acceptable positions. At the end of the Congress is expected to be signed by all participants an Appeal with recommendations that Kazakhstan plans to implement when they chair the OSCE and Organisation of Islamic Conference in 2010. Kazakhstan can be considered as a symbol of interfaith accord. The country is home to almost 3,200 mosques, churches and houses of prayer. Over 40 confessions and 130 nationalities and ethnic groups live peacefully in the country. Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran, president of the Papal Council for Inter-Religious Dialogue, represented the Catholic Church.

"В целях содействия возвращению духовности в качестве условия для гармоничного развития мира". Этот призыв, прозвучавший 1 июля этого года на открытии третьего Съезда лидеров мировых и традиционных религий в Астане, был обращен к религиозным лидерам всего мира от имени Президента Казахстана Назарбаева. В ходе конгресса, в котором приняли участие 77 делегаций из 35 стран, представляющих ислам, христианство, иудаизм и наиболее древние восточные религии, такие как буддизм, индуизм, даосизм, синтоизм и зороастризм, Президент пояснил: "Духовные лидеры всегда являются носителями основных нравственных ценностей, именно поэтому мы связываем с ними особые надежды". Назарбаев, инициатор Съезда, затем сказал, что нынешний кризис является одним из способов дать миру возможность измениться и стать лучше на основе диалога и взаимоприемлемых позиций. В конце Съезда участниками был подписан документ о мерах, которые Казахстан планирует ввести в действие в 2010 году, во время своего председательствования в ОБСЕ и Организации Исламская конференция. Казахстан, по сути, может считаться символом мирного сосуществования религий. В стране действует примерно 3200 мечетей, церквей и молитвенных домов, здесь мирно сосуществуют более 40 конфессий и 130 национальностей и этнических групп. The head of the Lutheran World Federation urged religious leaders from around the world to renounce Islamophobia during a conference convened by the president of Kazakhstan.

LWF general secretary the Rev. Ishmael Noko pointed to President ссылка скрыта and how he has avoided using “war against terror” language in his speeches to the Muslim world, according to Ecumenical News International.

Religious leaders should follow Obama’s example, Noko challenged, and also reject Islamophobia.

The Zimbabwean LWF leader was among more than 400 global religious leaders from some 60 countries who gathered for the Third Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan. The first of such meetings occurred in 2003 at the initiative of Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev. The second congress took place in 2006.

Religious leaders came from a wide range of faith traditions, including ссылка скрыта, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Hinduism, Taoism, Shintoism, and Zoroastrianism. During the July 1-2 gathering they renounced extremism, terrorism and other forms of violence in the name of religion. Participants also discussed how people from different religions can peacefully coexist.

“It lies in our hands to try and understand what creates differences between religions and to try and reduce these to the extent possible,” said Israel’s Shephardic Chief Rabbi Shlomo Amar during the congress, according to UzbekistanNews.net

Kazakhstan President Nazarbayev opened the congress on Wednesday, encouraging interfaith dialogue and the creation of a nuclear weapon-free world.

Israel President Shimon Peres, a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, agreed with Nazarbayev in calling for the end to nuclear weapons, ENI reported.

Other Christian leaders who attended the conference included the Rev. Dr. Samuel Kobia, general secretary of the World Council of Churches; the Metropolitan of France Emmanuel of the Constantinople Orthodox Church; the Metropolitan of Astana and Almaty Methodius of the Russian Orthodox Church; and Cardinal Joseph Tomco, president of the Congregation for Professing Gospels from the Vatican.
